Cursive d is the lowercase d and the capital D in traditional US cursive, and this page gives you a free printable practice sheet for both. The tool on this page builds that sheet. It runs in your web browser, is free, and needs no account or sign-up. You can choose the letters, line size, number of tracing rows and practice words, then print to US Letter or A4 or save a PDF. The letters are drawn in Playwrite US Trad, a font modeled on traditional American school cursive. Letter shapes differ between handwriting programs, so compare the sheet with the chart your child’s school uses.
How to use the cursive D practice sheet
- Under Letters, choose Capital D and lowercase d, Capital D only, or Lowercase d only.
- Under Line size, choose Extra large (1 inch) for pre-K to K, Large (3/4 inch) for K to 1st, Medium (5/8 inch) for 2nd, or Small (3/8 inch) for 3rd and up.
- Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase from 0 to 4 each.
- Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) from 0 to 3.
- Set Practice words to Off or to a number from 1 to 8 words.
- Optional: type up to 3 words in Your own words.
- Set Blank rows to write on from 0 to 6.
- Choose Tracing letters (Light gray or Dotted outline), Lines, and Color.
- Turn the Show descender line and Big model of the letter at the top checkboxes on or off as you like, and choose the paper size and title.
- Click Print or save as PDF.
The preview updates as you change each setting. Reset settings restores the defaults, and New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings. Each sheet has a worksheet code under the buttons. The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet.
The built-in practice words for d are dog, duck, door, dinner, daisy, bed, sand and cloud. Choose how many of them appear on the sheet, or type up to three of your own words, such as a name that contains the letter.
How do you write a capital D in cursive?
The capital D is a tall capital that reaches the top line and sits on the baseline. Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with the chart your school uses for the strokes, because stroke order differs between programs such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian.
How do you write a lowercase d in cursive?
The lowercase d is a tall letter that reaches the top line and sits on the baseline, like the other tall letters b, f, h, k and l. Unlike b, f, h, k and l, it has no loop at the top. Trace the gray copies and compare the finished letter with your school’s chart. In the trace rows the letters are placed one by one, but in the word rows they connect the way the font joins them.
What does the cursive letter d look like?
The cursive letter d is a lowercase tall letter with a straight stem that rises to the top line and rests on the baseline. It does not drop below the baseline, so it stays between the top line and the baseline, unlike the tailed letters f, g, j, p, q, y and z. The big model row shows the capital D and the lowercase d in dark letters so you can compare their heights side by side.
Does it show the stroke order with arrows?
No. The sheet does not show stroke order or arrows, because the order and direction of strokes differ between handwriting programs and a font cannot show them correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy. Use the chart your school uses for the strokes.
Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?
Yes. Under Letters, choose Capital D only or Lowercase d only, and the sheet is built for that letter alone. You can also set Rows to trace the capital or Rows to trace the lowercase to 0 to leave out one set of trace rows.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no account or sign-up, and runs in your browser without uploading anything. Click Print or save as PDF to print the sheet or save it as a PDF.
What paper sizes does the sheet support?
The sheet prints to US Letter or A4. The default sheet fits on one page of either size, but at the largest line size it runs to more than one page.
What is the dotted outline option for?
Choose Dotted outline under Tracing letters if you want the tracing letters drawn as dotted lines. A dotted outline uses little ink.
Which lines appear on the sheet?
The sheet uses a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline by default. Small letters such as a, c and o reach the dashed midline. You can also choose top line and baseline only, or baseline only.
Can I add my own words that contain d?
Yes. Your words can use letters, hyphens and apostrophes, up to 14 characters each. They appear before the built-in words and count toward the number of word rows. A word too wide for the chosen line size is left out, and a note appears.
Which practice words are built in?
The built-in words are dog, duck, door, dinner, daisy, bed, sand and cloud. The default sheet uses dog and duck. The letter pairs row is built from words and, for d, shows pairs such as do, du, di and da.
