This free tool makes a printable cursive G practice sheet covering the capital G and the lowercase g in traditional US cursive. It runs in your web browser, uploads nothing, and needs no account or sign-up. You can choose which letters appear, how many tracing rows to include, and whether to add practice words, then print the sheet or save it as a PDF.
The sheet is drawn on handwriting lines, with a top line, a dashed midline, and a baseline. A big model of each letter sits at the top, followed by gray letters to trace and blank rows to write on. Each part has a short label, so your child can see what to do in each row. The sheet works for a single letter, for both forms of the letter together, or as one part of a longer handwriting lesson.
How to use the cursive G practice sheet tool
- Under Letters, choose Capital G and lowercase g, Capital G only, or Lowercase g only.
- Keep Big model of the letter at the top on to show a large sample, or turn it off to save space.
- Pick a Line size that suits your child: Extra large for pre-K to K, Large for K to 1st, Medium for 2nd, or Small for 3rd and up.
- Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase, from 0 to 4 each.
- Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) from 0 to 3.
- Choose Practice words, from Off up to 8 words. You can also type up to 3 words in Your own words.
- Set Blank rows to write on, then choose the tracing style, lines, color, and paper size. Turn the descender line on or off as needed, and change the title if you want.
- Check the preview, then select Print or save as PDF.
The preview updates as you change each setting. Reset settings returns everything to the defaults, and New worksheet creates a different sheet with the same settings. The settings are stored in the page address, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet again.
How do you write a capital G in cursive?
Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with the chart your school uses for the strokes. The finished capital G is tall: it reaches the top line and sits on the baseline. It does not drop below the line. Because letter shapes and stroke orders differ between handwriting programs, the sheet does not give one fixed method. Use the school chart as your guide.
How do you write a lowercase g in cursive?
Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with your school’s chart. The finished lowercase g is a small, round letter. Its body reaches the dashed midline, and its tail goes below the baseline into the descender line. The tail is what makes it different from a, c, or o, which stay between the baseline and the midline.
What does the cursive letter g look like?
The cursive g has two forms that look different in size. The capital G is a tall letter that reaches the top line. The lowercase g is a short letter that reaches only the midline, with a tail below the baseline. Both forms are shown in the font this tool uses, Playwrite US Trad, which is modeled on traditional American school cursive.
Letters with tails, such as f, g, j, p, q, y, and z, go down to the descender line. This is why the sheet includes an optional lighter dashed line under the baseline. Keep the descender line on when you practice the lowercase g, so the tail has room.
In the big model row and the trace rows, the letters are placed one at a time and do not connect. In the word rows and the letter pairs row, the letters join the way the cursive font connects them. The pairs for g include go, gi, ga, gr, og, ag, ig, and ge.
Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?
Yes. The tool is free and needs no sign-up. It runs in your browser and does not upload your sheet anywhere. Select Print or save as PDF to print the sheet or save it as a PDF file. Paper can be set to US Letter or A4. The default sheet fits on one page of either size.
Does it show the stroke order with arrows?
No. The sheet does not show stroke order or arrows. The order and direction of strokes differs between handwriting programs, such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian, and a font cannot show that correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy. For the strokes, follow your school’s chart.
Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?
Yes. Under Letters, choose Capital G only or Lowercase g only. You can also set the rows for each letter separately, using Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase. Setting a row count to 0 removes that part of the sheet.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Which line size should I choose for a young child?
Choose Extra large, 1 inch, for pre-K to K, or Large, 3/4 inch, for K to 1st. Medium, 5/8 inch, suits 2nd grade, and Small, 3/8 inch, suits 3rd grade and up. At the largest size, the default sheet is more than one page tall, so you may want fewer rows.
Can I use my own words instead of the built-in ones?
Yes. Type up to 3 words in Your own words. Use letters, hyphens, and apostrophes only, up to 14 characters each. Your words are placed before the built-in words and count toward the number of word rows. A word that is too wide for one row at the chosen line size is left out, and a note appears.
Which practice words are included?
The built-in words that contain g are goat, girl, game, green, dog, bag, tiger, and magic. The default sheet uses goat and girl. A word that is too wide for two gray copies gets a second row for the copy.
Why does the lowercase g go below the line?
The lowercase g has a tail that drops below the baseline. The sheet includes a descender line for this reason. You can turn this line off with the descender checkbox if you do not need it.
Why do my letters look different from my child's workbook?
The tool uses one font, Playwrite US Trad, which is modeled on traditional American school cursive. Other handwriting programs use different letter shapes. Compare the sheet with the chart your child's school uses.
Can I save a sheet and come back to it later?
Yes. The settings are stored in the page address, so you can bookmark the link or share it to open the same sheet again. Reset settings returns the defaults, and New worksheet creates a fresh sheet with the same settings.
Does tracing ink use much paper?
The tracing letters can be printed as light gray letters or as a dotted outline. The dotted outline uses little ink. The dark model letters are always black.
