This free cursive L practice sheet is a printable worksheet for the capital L and the lowercase l in traditional US cursive. It gives you a large model, rows to trace, letter pairs, and short practice words that contain the letter, all on one sheet. The sheet is built in your web browser, so nothing is uploaded, and no account or sign-up is needed.

You choose which letters to include, the line size, how many tracing rows to print, and the paper size. The preview updates as you change each setting, and you can then print the sheet or save it as a PDF. The default sheet fits on one page of US Letter or A4 paper.

Click Reset settings to return to the defaults, or New worksheet to get a different sheet with the same settings. Each sheet has a short worksheet code under the buttons. All your settings are stored in the page address after the #, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet again.

How do you write a capital L in cursive?

Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with the chart your school uses, because stroke order differs between handwriting programs. Once you have the shape, check the finished letter against the sheet. In this font the capital L reaches the top line and sits on the baseline, so it is as tall as the top line and does not drop below the bottom line.

How do you write a lowercase l in cursive?

Trace the gray model on the sheet and compare it with your school’s chart, since the order and direction of strokes are not shown here. The finished lowercase l is a tall letter. It reaches the top line, and it sits on the baseline. It does not reach the dashed midline the way small letters such as a, c and o do.

In the word rows and the letter pairs row, the lowercase l connects to the next letter the way the cursive font joins them. In the big model row and the tracing rows, it is shown alone so you can see its shape.

What does the cursive letter l look like?

The cursive letter l is a tall lowercase letter. It stands with the other tall lowercase letters b, d, f, h, k and t, which all reach the top line. Its height is the reason it looks different from small letters, and it stays above the midline.

The lowercase l does not go below the baseline, so the descender line is not used by this letter. Only letters with tails, such as f, g, j, p, q, y and z, drop down to that line.

On the sheet, the capital L and the lowercase l appear side by side in the big model row, but they are not joined. Their shapes are separate, so compare each one with the chart your school uses.

Questions teachers and parents ask

Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?

Yes. The tool is free, needs no account or sign-up, and runs in your browser without uploading anything. Click Print or save as PDF to print the sheet or save it as a PDF.

Does it show the stroke order with arrows?

No. The sheet does not show stroke order or arrows, because the order and direction of strokes differ between handwriting programs, and a font cannot show them correctly. Use the chart your school uses for stroke order. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy.

Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?

Yes. Under Letters, choose Capital L only or Lowercase l only. The sheet then includes only that letter in the model, tracing, and word rows.

Which practice words does the sheet use for l?

The built-in words are lion, leaf, lamp, lemon, ball, bell, yellow and smile. The default sheet uses lion and leaf. You can also type up to 3 of your own words, using letters, hyphens and apostrophes only, with up to 14 characters each. A word that is too wide for one row at your chosen line size is left out, and a note appears.

Which paper sizes does the sheet support?

You can set the paper to US Letter or A4. The default sheet, with Medium line size, fits on one page of either size. The Extra large 1 inch setting makes the default sheet about 325 mm tall, which is more than one page, so choose a smaller line size if you want a single page.

Which line size should I choose?

Use Extra large 1 inch for pre-K through K, Large 3/4 inch for K through 1st grade, Medium 5/8 inch for 2nd grade, and Small 3/8 inch for 3rd grade and up. The Medium size is the default.

Can I save my settings and come back to them?

Yes. The settings are stored in the page address, so you can bookmark the page or share the link to open the same sheet. Click Reset settings to go back to the defaults.
