This page gives you a free printable cursive M practice sheet for the capital M and the lowercase m in traditional US cursive. It shows the cursive capital m and the cursive lowercase m on one sheet, with dark models to copy, gray letters to trace, and blank lines to write on.
The tool runs in your web browser. Nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account or sign-up. You can change the line size, the number of tracing rows, the practice words and the paper size, and the preview updates as you change them. When the sheet looks right, print it or save it as a PDF.
How to use the cursive M practice sheet
- Set Letters to Capital M and lowercase m, Capital M only, or Lowercase m only. The default is both.
- Choose a Line size that fits the child’s grade. Extra large (1 inch) suits pre-K to K, Large (3/4 inch) suits K to 1st, Medium (5/8 inch) suits 2nd, and Small (3/8 inch) suits 3rd and up. The default is Medium.
- Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase. Each can be 0 to 4. The default is 1 row each.
- Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) from 0 to 3, and Practice words from Off to 8 words. The default is 1 pair row and 2 word rows.
- If you want your own words, type them in Your own words (optional).
- Choose Blank rows to write on, Tracing letters (light gray or dotted outline), Lines and Color.
- Turn the Big model of the letter at the top and the Show descender line checkbox on or off as you need.
- Pick the paper size, US Letter or A4, then click Print or save as PDF.
The settings are saved in the page address after the #, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet. Reset settings restores the defaults. New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings, and each sheet has a short worksheet code shown under the buttons. You can also type a title in Title on the sheet.
How do you write a capital M in cursive?
The capital M reaches the top line and sits on the baseline. Trace the gray copies in the capital row, after looking at the dark model at the start of that row. The sheet shows the shape, but the strokes depend on the handwriting program, so compare your letter with the chart your school uses.
How do you write a lowercase m in cursive?
The lowercase m is a small letter. It reaches the dashed midline, not the top line, and it sits on the baseline. It is built from three humps, while the lowercase n has two, so counting humps is a quick way to check your letter against the n. Trace the gray copies in the lowercase row, then compare the finished letter with your school’s chart.
What does the cursive letter m look like?
The finished cursive letter m is small, has three humps, and sits on the baseline with no tail below it. It is much shorter than the capital M, which reaches the top line. In the letter pairs row, mo, om and rm show how m joins its neighbors. In the word rows, letters connect the way the cursive font joins them, while the big model row and the trace rows place the letters one by one.
Does it show the stroke order with arrows?
No. The sheet does not show stroke order or arrows. Stroke order and direction differ between handwriting programs such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian, and a font cannot show them correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy. For the order your child should use, check the chart your school uses.
Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?
Yes. Set Letters to Capital M only or Lowercase m only to limit the sheet to that one letter. Use the Rows controls to decide how much tracing and writing each letter gets.
Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?
Yes. Click Print or save as PDF to print on US Letter or A4 paper. The default sheet fits on one page of either size.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Why do the letters look different from my child's worksheet?
Letter shapes differ between handwriting programs, such as Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian. The font used here is modeled on traditional American school cursive. Compare the sheet with the chart your child's school uses.
How tall is the sheet at each line size?
At Extra large (1 inch), the default sheet is 325 mm tall, which is more than one page. At Small (3/8 inch), it is 156 mm. Medium is the default, and it fits on one page.
Why was one of my own words left off?
You can add up to 3 of your own words. Each word can use letters, hyphens and apostrophes, up to 14 characters. A word that is too wide for one row at the chosen line size is left out, and a note appears on the page. Try a larger line size or a shorter word.
Does the dotted outline use less ink than gray?
Yes. A dotted outline uses little ink, so it is a good choice for printing many copies. The dark model letters are always black, whichever tracing style you choose.
What do the Lines options change?
**Top line, dashed midline and baseline** shows all three guides. **Top line and baseline** removes the dashed midline. **Baseline only** shows just the bottom line. The top line helps with capitals and tall letters, and the midline helps with small letters such as m.
Which letters go below the baseline?
In this font, the lowercase f, g, j, p, q, y and z go below the baseline, and so do the capital J, Y and Z. The capital Q dips only slightly. Keep the **Show descender line** checkbox on to see the guide for these loops.
Can I hide the big model at the top?
Yes. Turn off the **Big model of the letter at the top** checkbox. The sheet then starts with the tracing rows.
