Cursive P is the letter p in traditional US cursive, and this page makes a free, printable practice sheet for both the capital P and the lowercase p. The tool runs in your web browser, so nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account or sign-up. Use the controls at the top of the page to choose how many tracing rows, letter pairs and practice words you want, then print the sheet or save it as a PDF. The default sheet has a large model of both letters, a tracing row for each, a row of letter pairs, two rows of practice words and one blank row to write on. Each part is labeled, so a child can see what to do on every row. This page covers only the letter p.
How to use the Cursive P practice sheet
- Open the tool at the top of the page. The sheet preview updates as soon as you change a setting.
- Under Letters, choose Capital P and lowercase p, Capital P only, or Lowercase p only.
- Set Line size for the writer: Extra large 1 inch (pre-K–K), Large 3/4 inch (K–1st), Medium 5/8 inch (2nd, the default), or Small 3/8 inch (3rd and up).
- Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase from 0 to 4. The default is 1 row for each.
- Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) from 0 to 3, and Practice words from Off to 8 words. The default is 2 words.
- Optionally type up to 3 words in Your own words (optional).
- Set Blank rows to write on, Tracing letters, Lines and Color. Keep the Big model checkbox on to show the large letters at the top, and keep the descender line checkbox on so the tail of the p has room.
- Check the preview, then select Print or save as PDF.
Paper size can be US Letter or A4. The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet. New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings, and each sheet has a worksheet code shown under the buttons. Reset settings restores the defaults.
How do you write a capital P in cursive?
Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with the chart your child’s school uses for the strokes. Stroke order differs between US handwriting programs, such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian, so the chart is the reference that matters for your child. The finished capital P is tall: it reaches the top line and sits on the baseline. Set Rows to trace the capital to add more practice rows. The default is one row, which shows one dark model followed by 8 gray copies.
How do you write a lowercase p in cursive?
Trace the gray model on the sheet, and check the stroke chart your school uses. The finished lowercase p is a small letter. It reaches the dashed midline, not the top line, and its tail goes below the baseline down to the descender line. That is why the descender line checkbox is on by default. Within a word, the p joins the letter after it in the way the cursive font connects them.
What does the cursive letter p look like?
On this sheet, the cursive p appears as two different letters. The capital P is tall and reaches the top line, while the lowercase p is small and reaches only the midline. The lowercase p is one of the letters that go below the baseline in this font, along with f, g, j, q, y and z. In the big model row and the trace rows, the capital and the lowercase are placed one by one and are not connected, so each letter can be seen whole. In the word rows, the letters connect the way the font joins them, so the p can be checked in context.
Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up, and runs in your browser without uploading anything. Select Print or save as PDF to print on US Letter or A4. The browser’s print dialog can also save the sheet as a PDF. The default sheet fits on one page of both paper sizes.
Does it show the stroke order with arrows?
No. The sheet does not show stroke order or arrows. The order and direction of strokes differ between handwriting programs, and a font cannot show them correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy. Use the chart your school uses to see the strokes, and use the sheet to practice the shape.
Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?
Yes. Set Letters to Capital P only or Lowercase p only. The rows to trace the capital and the rows to trace the lowercase are separate controls, and each can be set from 0 to 4. Setting a row count to 0 removes that row from the sheet.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Which line size should I choose?
Use Extra large 1 inch for pre-K through K, Large 3/4 inch for K through 1st, Medium 5/8 inch for 2nd (the default), and Small 3/8 inch for 3rd and up. At the largest size, the default sheet is 325 mm tall and runs onto more than one page. At the smallest size, it is 156 mm tall.
Can I add my own practice words?
Yes. Type up to 3 words in **Your own words (optional)**. Use letters, hyphens and apostrophes only, with up to 14 characters per word. Your words are placed before the built-in words and count toward the number of word rows. A word too wide for the chosen line size is left out, and a note appears.
Which pairs appear in the letter pairs row?
The row is built from the practice words. The pairs for p are pi, pe, pu, up, pp, py, pa, ap, pl, mp and ip. The default row shows pi, pe and pu, each once as a dark model and once as a gray copy to trace.
Which practice words are built in for p?
The built-in list is pig, pen, puppy, panda, apple, jump, soap and tulip. The first four start with p. The default sheet uses pig and pen. Each word appears once in dark letters, followed by gray copies across the row. A word too wide for two copies gets a second row for the gray copy.
What do the lines on the sheet mean?
The sheet has a solid top line, which capitals and tall lowercase letters reach, a dashed midline, which small letters such as a, c and o reach, and a solid baseline. An optional lighter dashed descender line sits under the baseline. Use **Lines** to choose which lines appear, and **Color** to switch to blue and red color lines.
Why are the tracing letters gray, and can I change them?
Tracing letters are light gray by default. Set **Tracing letters** to Dotted outline if you want a dotted outline instead, which uses little ink. The dark model letters are always black.
Can I return to the same sheet later?
Yes. Your settings are saved in the page address, after the #. Bookmark the page or share the link to reopen the exact sheet. **New worksheet** keeps your settings but makes a different sheet, with its own worksheet code.
