This free tool makes a printable cursive R practice sheet with a model of the capital R and the lowercase r, rows to trace, letter pairs and practice words that contain r. It runs in your web browser, nothing is uploaded, and no account or sign-up is needed.
The sheet is drawn on handwriting lines: a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline. You choose the letters, line size, number of tracing rows and words, then print the sheet or save it as a PDF. The font is modeled on traditional American school cursive, so compare the letter shapes with the chart your school uses. This page covers only the capital R and the lowercase r.
How to use the Cursive R Practice Sheet
- Choose Letters: Capital R and lowercase r, Capital R only, or Lowercase r only.
- Pick a Line size for the writer: Extra large, 1 inch (pre-K–K); Large, 3/4 inch (K–1st); Medium, 5/8 inch (2nd); or Small, 3/8 inch (3rd and up).
- Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase from 0 to 4 each.
- Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) from 0 to 3.
- Choose Practice words, from Off to 8 words. The default is 2 words.
- Optional: type up to 3 words in Your own words (optional).
- Set Blank rows to write on from 0 to 6.
- Pick Tracing letters (Light gray or Dotted outline), Lines and Color (Grayscale or Color lines).
- Check the preview, which updates as soon as a setting changes. Then select Print or save as PDF.
You can set the paper to US Letter or A4 before printing. The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet. New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings, and Reset settings restores the defaults.
The built-in practice words for r are red, rain, rabbit, robot, ring, star, bird and carrot. Choose how many of them appear on the sheet, or type up to three of your own words, such as a name that contains the letter.
How do you write a capital R in cursive?
Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with the chart your school uses for the strokes. The finished capital R reaches the top line and sits on the baseline, so it is as tall as the tall lowercase letters b, d, f, h, k and l. In the trace rows, capitals are placed one by one rather than joined, so practice the single letter before you try it in a word.
How do you write a lowercase r in cursive?
Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with your school’s chart. The lowercase r is a small letter. It reaches the dashed midline, rising slightly above it, and sits on the baseline. It does not reach the top line or go below the baseline. The default trace row has one dark model followed by 9 gray copies.
What does the cursive letter r look like?
On this sheet the cursive r is shown in three places: the big model row, the trace rows and the letter pairs. Its height is the same as the small letters a, c and o, which reach the midline, so the lowercase r is easy to tell apart from the tall capital R. In the pairs row it appears as re, ra and ro, and in the word rows as red and rain. Letter shapes differ between handwriting programs, so check the finished letter against your school’s chart.
Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up, and runs in your browser without uploading anything. Use Print or save as PDF to print on US Letter or A4, or to save the sheet as a PDF file. The default sheet fits on one page of either paper size.
Does it show the stroke order with arrows?
No. The sheet does not show stroke order or arrows. Stroke order and direction differ between US handwriting programs, such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian, and a font cannot show them correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy, so use your school’s chart for stroke order.
Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?
Yes. Set Letters to Capital R only or Lowercase r only. You can also set Rows to trace the capital or Rows to trace the lowercase to 0 to remove one of the trace rows.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Which line size should I choose?
Use Extra large, 1 inch for pre-K to K, Large, 3/4 inch for K to 1st, Medium, 5/8 inch for 2nd, or Small, 3/8 inch for 3rd and up. At the largest size the default sheet is 325 mm tall, so it will go over one page.
Can I add my own words?
Yes, up to 3 words. Use letters, hyphens and apostrophes only, with up to 14 characters each. Your words are placed before the built-in words. A word too wide for one row at the chosen line size is left out, and a note appears.
Which words does the sheet use for r?
The built-in list is red, rain, rabbit, robot, ring, star, bird and carrot. Five start with r, and three contain it later in the word. The default sheet uses red and rain.
Which letters go below the baseline?
The lowercase f, g, j, p, q, y and z go below the baseline, along with the capitals J, Y and Z. The capital Q goes down only slightly. The lowercase r does not. The descender line, which is on by default, marks where these tails end.
Can I come back to the same sheet later?
Yes. Your settings are saved in the page address after the # symbol, so bookmark the page or copy the link. Each sheet also has a short worksheet code shown under the buttons.
Does the lettering match my school's worksheets?
The font is Playwrite US Trad, which is modeled on traditional American school cursive. Schools differ, though, so compare the letter shapes with the chart your school uses.
Is a dotted outline better than light gray for tracing?
The choice is about ink and look. A dotted outline uses little ink, and light gray gives a solid guide. The dark model letters are always black either way.
