The cursive S worksheet tool makes printable practice sheets for the capital S and the lowercase s in traditional US cursive. It runs in your web browser, it is free, and it needs no sign-up. You choose which letters to include, the line size, how many rows to trace, and whether to add practice words that contain s. The sheet uses handwriting lines, so children can see where each part of the letter belongs. You can print the sheet or save it as a PDF.
The built-in practice words for s include sun, star and sock, and you can add up to three words of your own.
How to use the cursive S worksheet tool
- Open the Letters control and choose Capital S and lowercase s, Capital S only, or Lowercase s only.
- Choose a Line size. Use Extra large, 1 inch for pre-K to K, Large, 3/4 inch for K to 1st, Medium, 5/8 inch for 2nd grade (the default), or Small, 3/8 inch for 3rd and up.
- Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase. Each can be 0 to 4.
- Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) from 0 to 3.
- Set Practice words. Choose Off or a number from 1 to 8 words.
- If you want your own words, type up to 3 of them in Your own words (optional).
- Set Blank rows to write on (0 to 6), Tracing letters (light gray or dotted outline), Lines, and Color.
- Turn the Big model of the letter at the top and Show descender line checkboxes on or off as needed.
- Choose the paper size, US Letter or A4, and change the Title on the sheet if you like.
- Check the preview, which updates as you change each setting.
- Click Print or save as PDF.
Use Reset settings to return to the defaults. New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings, and each sheet shows a short worksheet code under the buttons. All settings are saved in the page address after the #, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet.
How do you write s in cursive?
This sheet does not teach the strokes, because stroke order differs between US handwriting programs such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian. Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with the chart your child’s school uses. The lowercase s is a small letter. It rises slightly above the dashed midline, sits on the baseline, and does not drop below it. In the word rows, letters connect the way the font joins them, so the s in “sun” or “star” links to the letter after it.
How to cursive big S?
The capital S reaches the top line and sits on the baseline, so it is as tall as the tall lowercase letters b, d, f, h, k, l and t. Use the big model row at the top of the sheet, where the capital S and lowercase s appear in dark letters, placed one by one and not connected. Then trace the gray copies in the capital trace row. Compare your letter with the chart your school uses, because the shape of a capital can differ between programs.
What does the cursive letter s look like?
The cursive s is a small letter that stays between the baseline and the dashed midline, with its top just above the midline. It is shorter than the top line, so it does not touch it. Unlike the letters f, g, j, p, q, y and z, it does not go down to the descender line. The shape comes from the Playwrite US Trad font, which is modeled on traditional American school cursive. Other handwriting programs draw the letter differently, so check the sheet against your school’s chart.
Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no account, and runs in the browser without uploading anything. Choose US Letter or A4, then click Print or save as PDF. The default sheet fits on one page of both sizes. At the largest line size, Extra large 1 inch, the default sheet is 325 mm tall and takes more than one page. At the smallest size, Small 3/8 inch, it is 156 mm tall.
Does it show the stroke order with arrows?
No. The sheet has no arrows and does not show stroke order, because the order and direction of strokes differ between handwriting programs, and a font cannot show them correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy. For the stroke order your child should use, follow the chart from the school.
Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?
Yes. Set the Letters control to Capital S only or Lowercase s only. If you want to remove a row, set its count to 0. Set Rows to trace the capital to 0 to remove the capital trace row, or set Rows to trace the lowercase to 0 to remove the lowercase trace row.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Which line size should I choose?
Pick the size that matches your child's grade. Extra large, 1 inch is for pre-K to K, Large, 3/4 inch is for K to 1st, Medium, 5/8 inch is for 2nd grade, and Small, 3/8 inch is for 3rd grade and up. Medium is the default.
Which practice words does the sheet use?
The built-in words for s are sun, star, sock, snake, sleep, bus, glass and dress. Five of them start with s, and the rest contain s later in the word. The default sheet uses sun and star, and you can choose up to 8 words.
Can I add my own words?
Yes. You can add up to 3 words. Use letters, hyphens and apostrophes only, with up to 14 characters each. Your words appear before the built-in words. If a word is too wide for one row at the chosen line size, the tool leaves it out and shows a note.
Does the s need a descender line?
The lowercase s does not go below the baseline, so it does not use the descender line. The descender line is for letters with tails, such as f, g, j, p, q, y and z. Turn the checkbox off if you do not need the line.
What does the dotted outline option do?
The Tracing letters control can print the tracing letters as light gray letters or as a dotted outline. A dotted outline uses less ink.
Can I save the sheet and come back to it later?
Yes. Your settings are saved in the page address, so you can bookmark the link or share it to open the same sheet again. Use New worksheet if you want a different sheet with the same settings.
