The Cursive U practice sheet is a free, printable worksheet for the capital U and the lowercase u in traditional US cursive. It runs in your web browser, so nothing is uploaded, and no account or sign-up is needed. Choose the letters, the line size and how many tracing rows you want, and the sheet preview updates as you change each setting. You can print it on US Letter or A4, or save it as a PDF. The default sheet includes a big model of both letters, rows to trace each one, letter pairs with u, practice words and a blank row for writing. This page covers only the letter u.
How to use the Cursive U practice sheet
- Set Letters to Capital U and lowercase u, Capital U only, or Lowercase u only.
- Pick a Line size that matches your grade: Extra large 1 inch (pre-K–K), Large 3/4 inch (K–1st), Medium 5/8 inch (2nd) or Small 3/8 inch (3rd and up).
- Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase from 0 to 4 each.
- Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) from 0 to 3.
- Set Practice words to Off or to a number from 1 to 8 words.
- Optionally type up to 3 words in Your own words.
- Set Blank rows to write on from 0 to 6.
- Choose Tracing letters (Light gray or Dotted outline), Lines and Color.
- Turn the Big model of the letter at the top and Show descender line checkboxes on or off.
- Check the preview, then select Print or save as PDF. Choose US Letter or A4 first if needed.
Use Title on the sheet to change the heading, which defaults to Cursive U. New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings, and each sheet shows a short worksheet code under the buttons. Reset settings restores the defaults. All settings are stored in the page address after the #, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet.
How do you write a capital U in cursive?
The capital U reaches the top line and sits on the baseline in this font. Trace the dark model and the gray copies in the capital row, then compare the letter with the chart your school uses for the strokes, because stroke order differs between handwriting programs such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian.
The finished capital is the same height as other capitals, so it is taller than the small letters on the sheet. Its height is the main thing to check when you compare your letter with the model.
How do you write a lowercase u in cursive?
The lowercase u is a small letter. It reaches the dashed midline and sits on the baseline, so it stays below the top line that tall letters such as b, d, f, h, k, l and t reach. Trace the dark model and gray copies in the lowercase row, and compare the letter with your school’s chart.
In the word rows, the u joins to the letters next to it the way the font joins them. In the big model row and the trace rows, letters are placed one by one and not connected.
What does the cursive letter u look like?
The cursive u is a short letter that stays between the baseline and the dashed midline. It does not drop below the baseline, so it has no tail reaching the descender line. Letters that do go below the baseline in this font are f, g, j, p, q, y and z, along with capital J, Y and Z.
Check your letter against the model for height first. A u that rises to the top line is taller than the model, and a u that drops below the baseline has gone past the bottom of its space.
Does it show the stroke order with arrows?
No. The sheet does not show stroke order or arrows. Stroke order and direction differ between handwriting programs, and a font cannot show them correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy, and your school’s chart is the right place to check the strokes.
Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?
Yes. Set Letters to Capital U only or Lowercase u only. You can also set Rows to trace the capital or Rows to trace the lowercase to 0 to leave out a row you do not need. The letter pairs and practice words are built from u, so they still appear according to their own settings.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Which line size should I choose?
Choose the size that matches your grade: Extra large 1 inch for pre-K to K, Large 3/4 inch for K to 1st, Medium 5/8 inch for 2nd, or Small 3/8 inch for 3rd and up. Larger lines give more room for each letter.
Does the default sheet fit on one page?
Yes. The default sheet is 221 mm tall plus the heading line, and it fits on one page of US Letter and of A4. At the Extra large 1 inch size, the default sheet is 325 mm tall, so it runs onto more than one page.
Can I add my own words?
Yes. You can add up to 3 words, using letters, hyphens and apostrophes only, with up to 14 characters each. Your words are placed before the built-in words and count toward the number of word rows. A word too wide for the chosen line size is left out, and a note appears.
What is the difference between light gray and dotted outline tracing?
Light gray letters are solid gray copies to trace. A dotted outline uses less ink when you print, and it still gives the same letter shape to follow. The dark model letters are always black.
Can I turn off the big model or the descender line?
Yes. Both are checkboxes that are on by default. The descender line is a lighter dashed line under the baseline, used for letters with tails that go below the baseline.
Can I save my settings or share the sheet?
Yes. Your settings are saved in the page address after the #, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet. Use **New worksheet** for a different sheet with the same settings, or note the worksheet code shown under the buttons.
Why does my school's chart look different?
Letter shapes and stroke orders differ between handwriting programs. The font used here is modeled on traditional American school cursive, so compare the sheet with the chart your school uses.
