This free cursive W practice sheet makes a printable page for the capital W and the lowercase w in traditional US cursive. It runs in your web browser, so nothing is uploaded and no sign-up is needed. The sheet includes a big model row, rows to trace each letter, letter pairs such as wa, we and wo, practice words such as water and web, and blank lines to write on. Pick the line size for your child’s grade, check the preview, then print or save the sheet as a PDF. This page covers one letter, and it is one of 27 cursive pages on this site.

How to use the Cursive W practice sheet

  1. Open Letters and choose Capital W and lowercase w, Capital W only, or Lowercase w only.
  2. Choose a Line size for your student: Extra large, 1 inch (pre-K–K), Large, 3/4 inch (K–1st), Medium, 5/8 inch (2nd), or Small, 3/8 inch (3rd and up).
  3. Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase (0 to 4 each).
  4. Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) (0 to 3) and Practice words (Off, or 1 to 8 words).
  5. Optionally type up to 3 words in Your own words.
  6. Set Blank rows to write on (0 to 6), then choose Tracing letters, Lines, Color, and whether to show the descender line.
  7. Check the sheet preview. It updates as soon as a setting changes.
  8. Choose the paper size (US Letter or A4), then select Print or save as PDF.

Settings are saved in the page address, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet. Reset settings restores the defaults, and New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings. Each sheet shows a short worksheet code under the buttons.

The built-in practice words for w are water, web, wolf, worm, window, cow, snow and flower. Choose how many of them appear on the sheet, or type up to three of your own words, such as a name that contains the letter.

How do you write a capital W in cursive?

Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with the chart your school uses, because stroke order differs between US handwriting programs such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian. In the font used here, the finished capital W reaches the top line and sits on the baseline, so it is as tall as the tall letters. It has no part that drops below the baseline.

How do you write a lowercase w in cursive?

Trace the gray model on the sheet, and check the school chart for the strokes. The finished lowercase w is a small letter. It reaches the dashed midline, not the top line, and it sits on the baseline. Like b, o and v, it joins to the next letter from the top of the letter rather than from the baseline, which you can see in the pairs row (wa, we, wo).

What does the cursive letter w look like?

The capital W is tall and sits on the baseline, while the lowercase w is small and stops at the dashed midline. Neither letter has a tail below the baseline. The big model row shows both letters in dark type, placed one by one and not connected. In the word rows, the letters join the way the cursive font connects them, so “water” and “web” show the w in context.

Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?

Yes. The tool is free, needs no account, and runs in the browser without uploading anything. Select Print or save as PDF to print the sheet, or use the browser’s print dialog to save a PDF. The default sheet fits on one page of US Letter and of A4.

Does it show the stroke order with arrows?

No. The sheet does not show stroke order or arrows, because the order and direction of strokes differ between handwriting programs, and a font cannot show them correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy. Use your school’s chart to check the strokes.

Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?

Yes. Set Letters to Capital W only or Lowercase w only. You can also set one of the trace-row controls to 0 to remove that row while keeping the other. Turn off the big model checkbox if you do not want the model row at the top.

Practice lines and tall letters

The sheet is drawn on handwriting lines: a solid top line, a dashed midline, and a solid baseline, with an optional lighter dashed descender line under the baseline. Capitals and tall letters reach the top line, small letters such as a, c and o reach the midline, and letters with tails go down to the descender line. Those rules explain why the W and the w look different in height on the page.

Questions teachers and parents ask

Which line size should I choose?

Choose by grade: Extra large (1 inch) for pre-K–K, Large (3/4 inch) for K–1st, Medium (5/8 inch) for 2nd, and Small (3/8 inch) for 3rd and up. Larger lines give more room for a beginner's letters.

Why is my sheet longer than one page?

At the Extra large size the default sheet is 325 mm tall, which is more than one page. Choose a smaller line size or fewer rows to fit the sheet on one page.

Which letters go below the baseline?

In this font, lowercase f, g, j, p, q, y and z go below the baseline, along with capital J, Y and Z. Capital Q drops only slightly. The W and the w do not.

What is the difference between tall letters and small letters?

Tall letters such as b, d, f, h, k, l and t reach the top line. Small letters such as a, c and o reach the dashed midline. The capital W reaches the top line, and the lowercase w reaches the midline.

Can I add my own words?

Yes. Type up to 3 words in Your own words, using letters, hyphens and apostrophes only, up to 14 characters each. Your words appear before the built-in words. A word too wide for one row at the chosen line size is left out, and a note appears.

What does the dotted outline option do?

Tracing letters can be light gray or a dotted outline. A dotted outline uses little ink. The dark model letters are always black.

Can I print on A4 paper?

Yes. Set the paper size to A4 or US Letter before you print or save as PDF. The sheet is designed to fit on one page of either size by default. ## Related tools
