This cursive writing worksheet tool makes printable sheets for practicing cursive letters, words or sentences, with a dark model, gray letters to trace and blank rows to write on. It runs in your web browser, it is free, and no account or sign-up is needed. Nothing you type is uploaded.

Choose a practice mode, type your letters, words or sentences, and the sheet preview updates as you change settings. You can then print the sheet or save it as a PDF. Line size, tracing rows and paper size (US Letter or A4) let you match the sheet to a child’s age and skill level, so one tool works for cursive writing practice sheets at home or in a classroom.

How to use the cursive writing worksheet tool

  1. Open the Practice menu and choose Letters, Words or Sentences.
  2. Type your content. In Letters mode, type the letters in the Letters to practice field in any order. In Words or Sentences mode, type into the Words (one per line) or Sentences (one per line) box.
  3. Set Letter case to Lowercase, Uppercase, or Uppercase and lowercase.
  4. Set Line size for the child’s grade: Extra large (pre-K–K), Large (K–1st), Medium (2nd), or Small (3rd and up).
  5. Set Tracing rows (0 to 6) and Blank rows to write on (0 to 4).
  6. Choose Tracing letters: Light gray or Dotted outline.
  7. Leave Show descender line on if your letters include g, j, p, q, y, z or f.
  8. Check the preview, then select Print or save as PDF.

Set paper size to US Letter or A4 before you print. Print at 100% scale (labeled “Actual size” in many print dialogs) so the line heights stay correct. New worksheet creates a different sheet with the same settings, and each sheet shows a worksheet code under the buttons. The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet again. Reset settings returns everything to the defaults.

What is the best cursive writing to teach first?

There is no single best cursive style for every child. The best starting point is clear, joined letters that sit on the same lines the child sees on the page, practiced in small groups.

Start with lowercase letters, which appear far more often in everyday writing. Lowercase cursive letters are often taught in groups that share an opening stroke. The round letters a, c, d, g, o and q start in a similar way, and the loop letters b, e, f, h, k and l form another family. Type one family into the Letters box at a time so each lesson stays focused.

Can you learn cursive writing online?

This tool runs in the browser, so you can create sheets on any device with a browser and no sign-up. The learning happens on paper: you print the sheet, the child traces the gray letters, and then writes on the blank rows. Keep the practice sheets as the main activity, and use a screen only to set them up.

How do beginners write cursive on primary lines?

Cursive is written on primary lines: a solid top line, a dashed midline, and a solid baseline. Small letters sit between the midline and the baseline, tall letters reach the top line, and the tails of f, g, j, p, q, y and z drop below the baseline toward the descender line. The font matches these lines exactly, so a child can see where each letter should start and end.

In cursive, the pencil stays on the paper through each word. It lifts only at the end of a word, or to dot i and j and cross t and x. Tilting the paper slightly helps the arm move naturally along the row. Leave a space about the width of a small o between words, so the words stay readable.

How do you practice joining cursive letters?

Joins are where cursive starts to feel like writing rather than drawing separate shapes. Once a child knows two or three letters, switch to Words and type short words made only from those letters. After a, d, g and o, for example, try “dog”, “go”, “add” and “odd”.

Each word appears once in dark letters, then repeats in gray across the row. This gives the child many chances to practice the same connections in a short space. Tracing the gray words builds the feel of continuous motion before the child writes alone.

Which settings suit each stage of learning cursive?

Short, regular sessions are easier for young writers to keep up than one long sitting. Match the settings to the stage of learning:

  • First weeks of cursive: Letters, lowercase, 3 to 5 at a time, Large or Medium line size, 1 to 3 tracing rows, 1 blank row.
  • Joining letters: Words that use the letters learned so far, Medium line size, 1 to 2 tracing rows, 1 to 2 blank rows.
  • Capitals: Letters, uppercase or both, Medium line size, 2 tracing rows, 1 blank row.
  • Fluent writers (4th–5th): Sentences or a short poem, Small line size, 0 to 1 tracing rows, 2 to 3 blank rows.

Typing the whole alphabet gives a complete review set when the child is ready for it.

How can sentences improve cursive handwriting?

Sentences give a child a full line of connected writing with a meaningful purpose. Write a short note or riddle in the Sentences box, let the child read it, and then copy it on the blank rows.

Why do the gray tracing letters look faint when printed?

Gray tracing letters print most clearly on a laser printer. If your printer prints light gray faintly, choose Dotted outline for the tracing letters instead. If the preview shows plain letters for a moment after the page opens, wait a second before printing, so the cursive font has loaded.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How do I create cursive handwriting worksheets?

Choose a practice mode, type your letters, words or sentences, and set the case, line size, tracing rows and blank rows. Check the preview, then select Print or save as PDF. Use New worksheet to make another sheet with the same settings.

Is this cursive writing page free to use?

Yes. The tool runs in your web browser, it is free, and no account or sign-up is needed. Nothing you type is uploaded.

How do I save cursive writing printouts as a PDF?

Select Print or save as PDF, then use your browser's print dialog to save the sheet as a PDF. Set paper size to US Letter or A4 and print at 100% scale so the lines keep their true height.

Which line size should I choose for cursive worksheets?

Use Extra large for pre-K to kindergarten, Large for kindergarten to 1st grade, Medium for 2nd grade, and Small for 3rd grade and up. The Medium size is the default.

Can I make cursive practice worksheets with uppercase letters?

Yes. Set Letter case to Uppercase, or to Uppercase and lowercase to practice both together. Capitals usually need fewer tracing rows, so 2 tracing rows and 1 blank row is a good starting point.

How do I practice the letter j in cursive?

Type j into the Letters box, or use a word such as "jam" in Words mode. Keep Show descender line on, because the loop of j drops below the baseline to the descender line.

Can I return to the same worksheet later?

Yes. The page address stores your settings, so bookmark the link or share it to open the same sheet again. Select Reset settings to return to the defaults.
