k5print.com
This free cursive Y worksheet prints practice sheets for the capital Y and the lowercase y in traditional US cursive. It works for a capital cursive y, a cursive capital y, or an uppercase y cursive page, and you can also choose the lowercase y alone. The tool runs in your web browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account or sign-up is needed, and it is free.
The sheet is drawn on handwriting lines with a top line, a dashed midline and a baseline. You choose the letters, the line size, how many tracing rows to include, practice words built around y, and blank rows for writing. The preview updates as you change each setting, so you can check the sheet before you print it or save it as a PDF.
How to use the cursive Y practice sheet
- In Letters, choose Capital Y and lowercase y (the default), Capital Y only, or Lowercase y only.
- In Line size, pick the size that fits the student: Extra large, 1 inch (pre-K–K); Large, 3/4 inch (K–1st); Medium, 5/8 inch (2nd); or Small, 3/8 inch (3rd and up).
- Set Rows to trace the capital and Rows to trace the lowercase from 0 to 4 each. The default is 1 row for each.
- Set Rows of letter pairs (joins) from 0 to 3. The default is 1.

- Turn the Big model of the letter at the top and Show descender line checkboxes on or off, set the paper size to US Letter or A4, and enter a title on the sheet.
- Check the preview, then select Print or save as PDF. The browser’s print dialog can also save a PDF.
Reset settings restores the defaults. New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings, and each sheet shows a short worksheet code under the buttons. All settings are stored in the page address after the #, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet.
How do you write a capital Y in cursive?
Trace the gray model on the sheet, then compare it with the chart your school uses, because stroke order differs between handwriting programs and this page does not claim one. In the finished letter, the capital Y reaches the top line, like the other capitals, and its tail drops below the baseline, down to the descender line. Use the dark model in the big row at the top as a reference for the overall size. The trace row for the capital shows one dark model followed by 8 gray copies, so you can repeat the same shape across the row.
How do you write a lowercase y in cursive?
Trace the gray model on the sheet and check your letter against the chart your school uses for the strokes. The finished lowercase y is a small letter. Its top reaches the dashed midline, not the top line, and its tail goes below the baseline to the descender line. Do not confuse it with the tall lowercase letters (b, d, f, h, k, l, t), which reach the top line. In the trace row for the lowercase, one dark model is followed by 10 gray copies.
What does the cursive letter y look like?
The capital Y and the lowercase y are both taller than the baseline and both drop below it, but they are different heights. The capital Y reaches the top line, while the lowercase y stops at the dashed midline. Both go down to the descender line. The big model row places the two letters one by one, so you can compare them side by side. In the word rows, the letter joins its neighbors the way the cursive font connects them, which is how the letter looks when it is used in writing.
Is this cursive practice sheet free to print?
Yes. The tool is free, runs in your browser, and needs no sign-up. Nothing is uploaded. Select Print or save as PDF to print the sheet or save it as a PDF. The default sheet fits on one page of US Letter and of A4. At the largest line size, Extra large (1 inch), the default sheet is 325 mm tall and takes more than one page. At the smallest size, Small (3/8 inch), it is 156 mm tall.
Does it show the stroke order with arrows?
No. The sheet has no stroke order and no arrows. The order and direction of strokes differ between handwriting programs, such as Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian, and a font cannot show them correctly. The first dark letter in each row is only a model to copy. For the strokes, use the chart your school already teaches. The letters are drawn in Playwrite US Trad, a font modeled on traditional American school cursive, so the shapes may still differ from your school’s chart.
Can I print only the capital or only the lowercase letter?
Yes. In the Letters control, choose Capital Y only or Lowercase y only. The default is Capital Y and lowercase y. If you want the capital letter without the lowercase, or the reverse, select the matching option before you print. Check the preview to confirm the sheet shows the letter you need.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Does the cursive y go below the line?
Yes. In this font, the lowercase y goes below the baseline and down to the descender line. The capital Y does the same. Keep the Show descender line checkbox on if you want that line printed under the baseline.
Will the letters join in the practice rows?
Only in the word rows. The word rows connect letters the way the cursive font joins them. The big model row and the trace rows place each letter separately, so the letters are not connected there.
Which practice words use y?
The built-in list is yes, yellow, yarn, yard, yogurt, happy, puppy and sky. Five of them start with y. The default sheet uses yes and yellow. You can choose from 1 to 8 words, or turn practice words off.
Can I add my own words that contain y?
Yes. You can add up to 3 words in Your own words. Use letters, hyphens and apostrophes only, with up to 14 characters per word. Your words print before the built-in words and count toward the number of word rows. A word that is too wide for the chosen line size is left out, and a note appears on the page.
Is my worksheet uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. The font is hosted with the page, so nothing is requested from other websites. You do not need an account to use it.
Can I save my settings and come back to them later?
Yes. All settings are stored in the page address after the #. Bookmark the page or share the link to open the same sheet again. Reset settings returns every control to its default.
Are the letter shapes the same as my school's?
They may not be. The font is modeled on traditional American school cursive, but letter shapes differ between handwriting programs. Compare the sheet with the chart your school uses.
