5 skills · answer key on every sheet

1st Grade ELA Worksheets

Every sheet below prints on plain letter paper and comes with its answer key on the second page. The words and sentences come from a hand-checked list for the skill, not generated on the fly — so a phonics sheet only ever contains real words.

1. Blends and Digraphs

Reading two consonants that blend together (bl, tr) or combine into one new sound (sh, th).

When: First grade.

Watch for: Dropping one letter of a blend — reading "desk" as "dek", or reading a digraph as two separate sounds — sounding out "sh" as "s" then "h".

  • RF.1.3.a

Next: Long vowels with silent e, the next layer of spelling patterns.

2. Long Vowels: Silent E

Recognizing that a silent e at the end of a word makes the vowel say its own name — cap becomes cape.

When: First grade, right after short vowels and blends are solid.

Watch for: Pronouncing the silent e as its own syllable, or forgetting it changes the vowel at all and reading "cape" as "cap".

  • RF.1.3.c

Next: Vowel teams, where two vowels together make one sound.

3. Sentence Word Order

Understanding that English sentences follow a standard word order — subject, then verb, then the rest.

When: First grade.

Watch for: Reordering words to match how the idea occurred to them rather than how English structures it — a common pattern for early writers and for multilingual learners translating word-for-word.

10 sets · 12 items each

  • L.1.1.j

Next: Nouns and verbs, naming the parts that make up a sentence.

4. Short Vowel Sounds

Naming which of the five short vowel sounds (a/e/i/o/u) is in a word.

When: First grade, building directly on kindergarten CVC decoding.

Watch for: Confusing short e and short i — "pen" and "pin" sound nearly identical to an early reader's ear.

10 sets · 20 items each

  • RF.1.3.b

Next: Blends and digraphs, adding consonant complexity around the vowel.

5. Sight Words: Grade 1

A second wave of high-frequency words to recognize instantly.

When: First grade, once pre-primer sight words are automatic.

Watch for: Re-sounding out words that were already memorized in kindergarten, because a new, less familiar batch makes a child doubt words they actually already know.

10 sets · 20 items each

  • RF.1.3.g

Next: Sentence word order, putting known words into real sentences.
