What this skill is

A second wave of high-frequency words to recognize instantly.

When it comes up: First grade, once pre-primer sight words are automatic.

The mistake to watch for

Re-sounding out words that were already memorized in kindergarten, because a new, less familiar batch makes a child doubt words they actually already know.

How to help

Mix review words from the pre-primer list in with the new ones, so recognition speed stays the visible goal rather than starting over.

Next: Sentence word order, putting known words into real sentences.

A worked example

Circle 'was' in: saw was has. Sight words like 'was' do not sound the way they are spelled, so it helps to spot the whole word at once.

Words to know

sight
A word you learn to know at a glance, without sounding it out.
word
A group of letters that has a meaning.
read
To look at words and say or understand them.
letter
One of the symbols we use to write words, like a, b or c.

Practice

Circle the word that matches.
