Comparing Two-Digit Numbers Worksheets

  • CCSS 1.NBT.B.3
  • 20 problems per set
  • Answer key included

What this skill is

Comparing two-digit numbers with the tens first, then the ones, and writing >, < or =.

When it comes up: First grade.

The mistake to watch for

Looking only at the ones digit, so 29 seems bigger than 41 because 9 is bigger than 1. The tens come first.

How to help

Say the tens out loud: 2 tens against 4 tens. The number with more tens wins; only when the tens match do you look at the ones.

Next: Place value to hundreds in second grade.

A worked example

Compare 47 and 52. Look at the tens first: 4 tens is less than 5 tens, so 47 < 52. If the tens match, as in 63 and 68, compare the ones: 3 < 8, so 63 < 68.

Words to know

compare

greater
Bigger in amount. 9 is greater than 4.
less

equal
The same amount. The sign = means "is equal to".
digit
