What this skill is

Reading a two-digit number as a count of tens plus a count of ones.

When it comes up: Second half of first grade.

The mistake to watch for

Reading 47 as "four and seven" rather than "forty and seven", which later makes column addition look arbitrary.

How to help

Bundle straws into tens with rubber bands. Forty-seven is four bundles and seven loose — you can see it.

Next: Addition within 100.

A worked example

Take 47. The 4 is in the tens place, so it means 4 tens, or 40. The 7 is in the ones place, so it means 7. 47 = 4 tens and 7 ones.

Words to know

digit
One of the ten number symbols 0 to 9. The number 47 has two digits.
place
Where a digit sits in a number: ones, tens or hundreds.
value
How much a digit is worth because of where it sits. In 47, the 4 is worth 40.
ten
The number 10, one more than nine.
number
A word or symbol that tells how many, like 5 or twelve.

Practice

Break each number into tens and ones.
