Subtraction Within 20 Worksheets
What this skill is
Subtracting within 20 in cases that do not need borrowing — 17 − 4, 19 − 6.
When it comes up: Early first grade.
The mistake to watch for
Counting back one at a time and losing the count somewhere in the middle.
How to help
Split the teen number: 17 − 4 is 10 and 7, take 4 from the 7. The ten never moves.
Next: Subtraction with borrowing to 20.
A worked example
Try 13 − 4. Count back four from 13: 12, 11, 10, 9. So 13 − 4 = 9. You can check it: 4 + 9 = 13.
