What this skill is

Telling time on a clock to the hour and the half hour.

When it comes up: First grade.

The mistake to watch for

Mixing up the two hands. The short hand names the hour; the long hand says how far past the hour it is.

How to help

Make a paper-plate clock with a short and a long hand. Long hand on 12 means “o'clock”. Long hand on 6 means “half past”.

Next: Telling time to 5 minutes in second grade.

A worked example

The short hour hand is on 4 and the long minute hand is on 12. That is 4 o'clock, written 4:00. If the minute hand moves to 6, it is half past: 4:30, and the hour hand sits halfway between 4 and 5.

Words to know

clock
A tool that shows the time with an hour hand and a minute hand.
hour
A length of time: 60 minutes. The short hand on a clock shows the hour.
minute
A length of time: 60 seconds. The long hand on a clock shows the minutes.
half
One of two equal parts. Half past 4 is 4:30.
time
What a clock tells, like 3:15, or how long something takes.
