What this skill is

Finding 10 more or 10 less than a two-digit number without counting by ones: only the tens digit changes.

When it comes up: First grade.

The mistake to watch for

Changing the ones digit as well. 10 more than 34 is 44: the tens change and the ones stay.

How to help

Use a hundred chart: one row down is 10 more, one row up is 10 less.

Next: Adding and subtracting multiples of 10.

A worked example

What is 10 more than 34? Look at the tens digit: 3 tens becomes 4 tens and the ones stay the same, so the answer is 44. What is 10 less than 34? 3 tens becomes 2 tens: 24.
