Addition Word Problems Worksheets

What this skill is

Reading a short story about putting groups together and deciding that it is an addition problem.

When it comes up: Through first grade, once adding within 20 feels comfortable.

The mistake to watch for

Adding the two numbers in the story without checking what the question asks. Read the last sentence first: it says what you are looking for.

How to help

Act the story out with small objects, or draw it, before writing any numbers. Ask: what do we know, and what do we want to find out?

Next: Subtraction word problems, where the story takes some away.

A worked example

Mia has 6 stickers. Then Mia gets 5 more stickers. How many in all? Both groups are being put together, so add: 6 + 5 = 11. Mia has 11 stickers.
