6 skills · answer key on every sheet

2nd Grade ELA Worksheets

Every sheet below prints on plain letter paper and comes with its answer key on the second page. The words and sentences come from a hand-checked list for the skill, not generated on the fly — so a phonics sheet only ever contains real words.

1. Capitalization and Punctuation

Starting sentences with a capital letter and ending them with the right punctuation mark.

When: Second grade, though it's reinforced every year after.

Watch for: Treating every sentence as a period-ending statement, forgetting that a question needs a question mark or an exclamation needs an exclamation point.

10 sets · 12 items each

  • L.2.2.a

Next: Parts of speech, a more formal look at how sentences are built.

2. Contractions

Combining two words into one shorter word using an apostrophe in place of missing letters.

When: Second grade.

Watch for: Putting the apostrophe in the wrong spot — writing "don't" as "do'nt", placing it where the words originally joined rather than where letters were dropped.

10 sets · 20 items each

  • L.2.2.c

Next: Nouns and verbs, a different kind of word-level skill.

3. Nouns and Verbs

Telling whether a word names a person, place, or thing (noun) or names an action (verb).

When: Second grade.

Watch for: Classifying by word length or familiarity rather than function — assuming short words are always verbs.

10 sets · 20 items each

  • L.2.1.b

Next: Prefixes and suffixes, which change what a word means without changing its core job.

4. Prefixes and Suffixes

Adding a word part to the front (prefix) or end (suffix) of a root word to change its meaning.

When: Second grade.

Watch for: Guessing the new word's meaning from the root alone and ignoring what the prefix or suffix adds — reading "unhappy" as just "happy".

10 sets · 18 items each

  • L.2.4.b

Next: Capitalization and punctuation, moving from words to full sentences.

5. R-Controlled Vowels

Recognizing that a vowel followed by r doesn't make its usual short or long sound — the ar in car, the ir in bird.

When: Second grade, often taught right alongside vowel teams.

Watch for: Sounding out the vowel on its own first, then adding the r as an afterthought — turning "car" into "ca-er".

10 sets · 20 items each

  • RF.2.3.b

Next: Contractions, a spelling pattern rather than a sound pattern.

6. Vowel Teams

Reading two vowels together that make one sound — the ai in rain, the oa in boat.

When: Second grade.

Watch for: Trying to sound out both vowels separately — reading "boat" as "bo-at" instead of one sound.

10 sets · 20 items each

  • RF.2.3.b

Next: R-controlled vowels, another two-letter pattern that changes the vowel sound.
