Capitalization and Punctuation Worksheets

  • CCSS L.2.2.a
  • 12 items per set
  • Answer key included

What this skill is

Starting sentences with a capital letter and ending them with the right punctuation mark.

When it comes up: Second grade, though it's reinforced every year after.

The mistake to watch for

Treating every sentence as a period-ending statement, forgetting that a question needs a question mark or an exclamation needs an exclamation point.

How to help

Have your child read the sentence out loud in the tone it's meant to be said. The tone usually reveals which punctuation mark fits.

Next: Parts of speech, a more formal look at how sentences are built.

A worked example

Fix: can we go to the park. It is a question, so it ends with a question mark, and the first word needs a capital letter: 'Can we go to the park?'
