What this skill is

Telling whether a word names a person, place, or thing (noun) or names an action (verb).

When it comes up: Second grade.

The mistake to watch for

Classifying by word length or familiarity rather than function — assuming short words are always verbs.

How to help

Ask "can you do this?" A word you can physically act out is a verb; a word you can point to or hold is a noun.

Next: Prefixes and suffixes, which change what a word means without changing its core job.

A worked example

In 'The bird sings', 'bird' is a noun — a person, place or thing — and 'sings' is a verb — an action. Ask yourself: can you do it? If you can, the word is probably a verb.

Words to know

noun
A word for a person, place or thing, like girl, school or ball.
verb
A word that tells an action or a state, like run, is or sing.
action
A word that tells what someone or something does, like run, jump or read.
person
A man, woman, boy or girl.
place
Where a digit sits in a number: ones, tens or hundreds.
