What this skill is

Adding up coins to find a total in cents: a quarter is 25, a dime 10, a nickel 5 and a penny 1.

When it comes up: Second grade.

The mistake to watch for

Counting every coin as one cent. Start with the biggest coin and count on from there.

How to help

Sort the coins from biggest to smallest, then count on out loud: 25, 50, 60, 65, 66.

A worked example

2 quarters, 1 dime and 3 pennies. Start with the biggest coins: 25, 50. Add the dime: 60. Add the pennies one at a time: 61, 62, 63. The total is 63 cents.
