What this skill is

Counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and beyond.

When it comes up: Throughout second grade.

The mistake to watch for

Skip counting fluently from zero but stalling when asked to start from another number — 15, 20, 25 is harder than 5, 10, 15.

How to help

Practice starting from odd places on a hundreds chart. The step size is what matters, not the starting point.

Next: Repeated addition and arrays.

A worked example

Count by fives: 5, 10, 15, 20, ___. Each number is 5 more than the one before it, so the next number is 25.

Words to know

count
To say numbers in order to find out how many there are.
pattern
Something that repeats in a way you can predict, like 2, 4, 6, 8.
number
A word or symbol that tells how many, like 5 or twelve.
skip
To go past some numbers when you count, like 5, 10, 15.
next
The one that comes right after.

Practice

Write the next number in each pattern.
