What this skill is

Reading a clock to the nearest 5 minutes by counting by fives around the clock face.

When it comes up: Second grade.

The mistake to watch for

Reading the number the minute hand points to as the minutes. When it points to 3, that is 15 minutes, not 3.

How to help

Count by fives around the clock starting at the 12: 5, 10, 15, 20 …

A worked example

The hour hand is just past 7 and the minute hand points to 4. Count by fives from the 12: 5, 10, 15, 20. So it is 20 minutes past 7, written 7:20.

Words to know

clock
A tool that shows the time with an hour hand and a minute hand.
hour
A length of time: 60 minutes. The short hand on a clock shows the hour.
minute
A length of time: 60 seconds. The long hand on a clock shows the minutes.
time
What a clock tells, like 3:15, or how long something takes.
count
To say numbers in order to find out how many there are.
