3rd Grade ELA Worksheets
Every sheet below prints on plain letter paper and comes with its answer key on the second page. The words and sentences come from a hand-checked list for the skill, not generated on the fly — so a phonics sheet only ever contains real words.
1. Multisyllabic Words
Breaking longer words into syllables to read them piece by piece instead of all at once.
When: Third grade, as vocabulary words get noticeably longer.
Watch for: Trying to sound out the whole word in one attempt and giving up or guessing from the first syllable alone.
10 sets · 16 items each
Next: Root words in fourth grade, which explain where parts of long words come from.
2. Parts of Speech
Identifying whether a word in a sentence is a noun, verb, or adjective, based on its job in that sentence.
When: Third grade.
Watch for: Classifying a word by what it usually is rather than what it's doing in this specific sentence — "run" is usually a verb, but in "she went for a run" it's a noun.

Next: Multisyllabic words, a decoding skill for the longer vocabulary third grade introduces.
