What this skill is

Dividing by 2, 3, 4, and 5 with no remainder.

When it comes up: Middle of third grade, right after the matching multiplication facts.

The mistake to watch for

Reading 12 ÷ 3 as 3 ÷ 12, or answering 36 by multiplying out of habit.

How to help

Ask the multiplication question instead: "three times what makes twelve?" Division is the same fact read backwards.

Next: Division by 6 to 12.

A worked example

Try 20 ÷ 4. Ask: what times 4 makes 20? 5 × 4 = 20, so 20 ÷ 4 = 5. Division is multiplication run backwards.
