What this skill is

Seeing 4, 6, and 24 as one family: 4×6, 6×4, 24÷4, 24÷6.

When it comes up: Middle of third grade.

The mistake to watch for

Writing 4 ÷ 24 for one of the divisions — the product must come first.

How to help

Name the whole and the parts before writing anything. Twenty-four is the whole, so it leads every division.

Next: Fractions.

A worked example

The numbers 4, 6 and 24 make a family: 4 × 6 = 24, 6 × 4 = 24, 24 ÷ 4 = 6, 24 ÷ 6 = 4. The largest number is always the one you divide.

Words to know

multiply
To add the same number again and again, in a faster way.
divide
To share a number into equal groups, or to find how many groups fit.
product
The answer you get when you multiply.
factor
A number you multiply. In 4 × 6 = 24, the factors are 4 and 6.
family
A group of numbers that go together, like 3, 4 and 7 in a fact family.
