3-Digit Subtraction Worksheets

What this skill is

Three-digit subtraction with regrouping, including across a zero.

When it comes up: Third grade.

The mistake to watch for

Regrouping across a zero — 400 − 137 stalls because there is nothing in the tens column to borrow from.

How to help

Treat 400 as 39 tens and 10 ones. Writing that step out once usually settles it for good.

Next: Multi-digit multiplication.

A worked example

Try 502 − 274. There are no tens to take from, so trade a hundred for ten tens: 502 becomes 4 hundreds, 9 tens and 12 ones. Now 12 − 4 = 8, 9 − 7 = 2 and 4 − 2 = 2. The answer is 228.

Words to know

subtract
To take one number away from another to find how many are left.
regroup
To trade 10 ones for 1 ten (or 1 ten for 10 ones) when you add or subtract.
difference
The answer you get when you subtract.
hundred
Ten tens, written 100.
estimate
To find an answer that is close, without doing the exact work.

Practice

Subtract. Regroup when you need to.
