Place Value to Millions Worksheets

  • CCSS 4.NBT.A.2
  • 12 problems per set
  • Answer key included

What this skill is

Reading and understanding numbers up to the millions: each digit is worth ten times the digit to its right.

When it comes up: Fourth grade.

The mistake to watch for

Giving the digit's name instead of its value. The 6 in 3,462,810 is in the ten thousands place, so it is worth 60,000, not 6.

How to help

Write the number in a place-value chart and read it in groups of three digits, separated by commas.

Next: Rounding large numbers.

A worked example

What is the value of the digit 4 in 3,462,810? Count the places from the right: ones 0, tens 1, hundreds 8, thousands 2, ten thousands 6, hundred thousands 4, millions 3. The 4 is in the hundred thousands place: 4 × 100,000 = 400,000.
