Rounding Large Numbers Worksheets
What this skill is
Rounding numbers up to a million to the nearest thousand, ten thousand or hundred thousand.
When it comes up: Fourth grade.
The mistake to watch for
Keeping the digits after the rounding place instead of replacing them with zeros.
How to help
Underline the digit in the rounding place, look at the digit right after it, then round up or stay.
Next: Estimating sums and differences.
A worked example
Round 48,362 to the nearest thousand. The thousands digit is 8. Look at the digit after it, 3. It is less than 5, so the 8 stays: 48,000. Round 48,762 and the 7 says round up: 49,000.
