Comparing Decimals Worksheets

  • CCSS 5.NBT.A.3
  • 20 problems per set
  • Answer key included

What this skill is

Comparing decimals one place at a time from the left: tenths, then hundredths, then thousandths.

When it comes up: Fifth grade.

The mistake to watch for

Thinking that a decimal with more digits is bigger. 0.45 is bigger than 0.405 even though 0.405 has more digits.

How to help

Write zeros so both numbers have the same number of places: 0.450 and 0.405.

Next: Rounding decimals.

A worked example

Compare 0.45 and 0.405. Write 0.45 as 0.450. Tenths: 4 and 4 are the same. Hundredths: 5 is more than 0, so 0.450 > 0.405.
