The Coordinate Plane Worksheets

What this skill is

Finding positions on a grid with two numbers: the first says how far across, the second how far up.

When it comes up: Fifth grade.

The mistake to watch for

Swapping the two numbers. (3, 5) is 3 across and 5 up, not 5 across and 3 up. Run before you jump.

How to help

Start at the starting point, move along the horizontal line first, then up or down.

Next: Graphing patterns on the coordinate plane.

A worked example

Start at (2, 3). Move 4 right and 2 up. Right changes the first number: 2 + 4 = 6. Up changes the second number: 3 + 2 = 5. You land at (6, 5).

Words to know

coordinate
A pair of numbers, like (3, 5), that tells where a point is on a grid.
axis
One of the two number lines that make a coordinate grid: the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis.
origin
The point (0, 0) where the two axes meet.
point
An exact place on a line or a grid.
grid
A pattern of straight lines that cross to make squares, used to find places.

Practice

Find where you land.
