What this skill is

Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 moves the digits, and an exponent shows how many tens are multiplied together.

When it comes up: Fifth grade.

The mistake to watch for

Adding zeros to a decimal: 3.4 × 100 is 340, not 3.400. The digits move; the zeros are only placeholders.

How to help

Count the zeros: × 100 moves each digit 2 places to the left, and ÷ 100 moves each digit 2 places to the right.

Next: Decimal operations.

A worked example

3.4 × 100 = 340: each digit moves 2 places left. 560 ÷ 100 = 5.6: each digit moves 2 places right. 10³ means 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000.
