Kindergarten ELA Worksheets

Every sheet below prints on plain letter paper and comes with its answer key on the second page. The words and sentences come from a hand-checked list for the skill, not generated on the fly — so a phonics sheet only ever contains real words.

1. Beginning Sounds

Hearing that words starting with the same letter start with the same sound.

When: Early-to-mid kindergarten, alongside letter recognition.

Watch for: Matching by what a word looks like or means instead of how it sounds — pairing "whale" with "web" because both are animals, not because they start the same.

  • RF.K.2.d

Next: Rhyming, the other half of phonological awareness.

2. CVC Words

Reading and building simple consonant-vowel-consonant words like cat, hop, and bug.

When: Late kindergarten into early first grade.

Watch for: Reading only the first and last letter and guessing the middle vowel — turning "hop" into "hip" or "hap".

10 sets · 30 items each

  • RF.K.3.b

Next: Short vowel sounds, naming what was just practiced by ear.

3. Letter Recognition

Naming and matching all 26 letters in both uppercase and lowercase.

When: Throughout kindergarten, usually the very first reading skill taught.

Watch for: Confusing letters that are mirror images of each other — b/d and p/q are the two that trip up almost every child.

10 sets · 20 items each

  • RF.K.1.d

Next: Beginning sounds, once letters and their names are solid.

4. Rhyming Words

Hearing that two words share an ending sound, regardless of spelling.

When: Kindergarten, often taught alongside nursery rhymes and songs.

Watch for: Matching by the first letter instead of the ending sound — pairing "cat" with "can" because both start with c.

10 sets · 20 items each

  • RF.K.2.a

Next: CVC words, where hearing sounds turns into reading them.

5. Sight Words: Pre-Primer

Recognizing the ~40 most common words instantly, without sounding them out.

When: Kindergarten. These words appear so often that decoding them every time slows reading to a crawl.

Watch for: Trying to sound out words like "the" or "said" phonetically — many sight words don't follow regular phonics rules, which is exactly why they need to be memorized by sight instead.

10 sets · 20 items each

  • RF.K.3.c

Next: Short vowel sounds and blends, the phonics skills sight words deliberately skip.
