What this skill is

Reading and building simple consonant-vowel-consonant words like cat, hop, and bug.

When it comes up: Late kindergarten into early first grade.

The mistake to watch for

Reading only the first and last letter and guessing the middle vowel — turning "hop" into "hip" or "hap".

How to help

Have your child touch each letter and say its sound before blending: h - o - p, then "hop" all together. Skipping the vowel is the single most common decoding error at this stage.

Next: Short vowel sounds, naming what was just practiced by ear.

A worked example

Unscramble o-g-d. Try the sounds in order: d-o-g. The letters make 'dog' — consonant, vowel, consonant, which is what CVC stands for.

Words to know

vowel
The letters a, e, i, o and u. Every syllable has a vowel sound.
consonant
Any letter that is not a vowel, like b, c, d or f.
letter
One of the symbols we use to write words, like a, b or c.
sound
What you hear when you say a letter or a word.
word
A group of letters that has a meaning.
