What this skill is

Deciding which of two numbers is bigger or smaller, up to 10.

When it comes up: Kindergarten, once counting to 10 is secure.

The mistake to watch for

Choosing the number that looks bigger on the page, or the one that comes first, instead of thinking about how many.

How to help

Put two lines of blocks side by side and match them one to one. The line with blocks left over is the bigger number.

Next: Addition within 5.

A worked example

Which is bigger, 4 or 7? Count out 4 blocks and 7 blocks and line them up side by side. 7 has 3 extra blocks, so 7 is bigger and 4 is smaller.
