Subtraction Within 10 Worksheets
What this skill is
Taking away from a starting number of 10 or less.
When it comes up: Late kindergarten.
The mistake to watch for
Counting down and including the starting number, so 8 − 3 becomes 6 — the child counts "eight, seven, six" for three steps instead of counting back three from eight.
How to help
Count back on a number line, touching the lines between numbers rather than the numbers themselves. Three jumps, not three names.
Next: Number bonds to 10.
A worked example
Try 9 − 4. Start at 9 and count back four: 8, 7, 6, 5. So 9 − 4 = 5.
