Arrays and Repeated Addition
Seeing objects in equal rows and writing the total as repeated addition. Second grade, the step before multiplication.
The mistake to watch for. Counting every dot one at a time and losing track, instead of finding one row and adding it again for each row.
How to help. Cover all the rows except one: this row has 5. Uncover the next row and say 5 + 5 = 10. Each row adds the same amount again.
A worked example
An array has 3 rows with 5 dots in each row. Write 5 + 5 + 5 = 15. The array has 15 dots, and you can also say 3 × 5 = 15.
