Week 8 of 8

Week 8

2nd Grade → 3rd Grade · Word problems 2step and Capitalization punctuation

Math

Two-Step Word Problems

Stories that need two steps, such as taking some away and then adding some more. Second grade, after one-step word problems and adding and subtracting within 100.

The mistake to watch for. Doing only the first step and stopping. Each sentence in the story is usually a step.

How to help. Write the story's two steps as two small number sentences, one under the other, before looking for the final answer.

A worked example

Sam had 35 stickers. Sam gave 12 to a friend, then found 8 more. Step 1: 35 − 12 = 23. Step 2: 23 + 8 = 31. Sam has 31 stickers.

Reading & language

Capitalization and Punctuation

Starting sentences with a capital letter and ending them with the right punctuation mark. Second grade, though it's reinforced every year after.

The mistake to watch for. Treating every sentence as a period-ending statement, forgetting that a question needs a question mark or an exclamation needs an exclamation point.

How to help. Have your child read the sentence out loud in the tone it's meant to be said. The tone usually reveals which punctuation mark fits.

A worked example

Fix: can we go to the park. It is a question, so it ends with a question mark, and the first word needs a capital letter: 'Can we go to the park?'
