Area and Perimeter of Rectangles
Area is the flat space a rectangle covers, in square units. Perimeter is the distance around its edge, in units. Third grade, after the multiplication facts.
The mistake to watch for. Mixing the two up: multiplying when asked for the distance around, or adding all four sides when asked for the space inside.
How to help. Draw the rectangle. Trace your finger around the edge for perimeter. Cover it with a grid of squares for area.
A worked example
A rectangle is 5 units long and 3 units wide. Area: 5 × 3 = 15 square units. Perimeter: 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 units.
