2-Digit × 1-Digit Multiplication
Multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number — 47 × 6. Early fourth grade.
The mistake to watch for. Multiplying the ones, then adding the carry before multiplying the tens instead of after.
How to help. Say the order out loud each time: multiply, then add the carry. Doing it in the wrong order gives an answer that looks plausible.
A worked example
Try 34 × 6. Multiply the ones: 4 × 6 = 24 (write 4, carry 2). Multiply the tens: 3 × 6 = 18, plus the 2 carried makes 20. Put it together: 204.
