Math

2-Digit × 2-Digit Multiplication

Multiplying two two-digit numbers — 34 × 27. Middle of fourth grade.

The mistake to watch for. Forgetting the placeholder zero on the second row, which shifts the whole partial product one column left.

How to help. Write the zero first, before multiplying the second row. Putting it in afterwards is when it gets skipped.

A worked example

Try 23 × 14. First multiply by the 4 ones: 23 × 4 = 92. Then by the 1 ten: 23 × 10 = 230. Add the two parts: 92 + 230 = 322.
