Decimals: Tenths and Hundredths

Writing fractions with 10 or 100 on the bottom as decimals, and writing decimals as fractions. Fourth grade, after fractions.

The mistake to watch for. Writing 7/100 as 0.7 instead of 0.07 — leaving out the zero that holds the tenths place.

How to help. Use a place-value chart: hundredths need two places after the point. 7/100 has no tenths, so it is 0.07.

A worked example

Write 7/100 as a decimal. Hundredths need two places after the point, and there are no tenths, so 7/100 = 0.07. Compare 7/10 = 0.7.
