Factors and Multiples

Factors are numbers you can multiply to make another number. A number is a factor if it divides the other number with nothing left over. Fourth grade, using the multiplication facts.

The mistake to watch for. Forgetting 1 and the number itself, or listing only the first pairs found.

How to help. Look for pairs: 1 × 12, 2 × 6, 3 × 4. Check each whole number up to the middle, and write each pair's partner too.

A worked example

List the factors of 18. Check each number from 1: 1 × 18, 2 × 9, 3 × 6. So the factors are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 18. 4 and 5 do not divide 18 evenly.
