Week 7

5th Grade → 6th Grade · Coordinate plane and Text structure

Math

The Coordinate Plane

Finding positions on a grid with two numbers: the first says how far across, the second how far up. Fifth grade.

The mistake to watch for. Swapping the two numbers. (3, 5) is 3 across and 5 up, not 5 across and 3 up. Run before you jump.

How to help. Start at the starting point, move along the horizontal line first, then up or down.

A worked example

Start at (2, 3). Move 4 right and 2 up. Right changes the first number: 2 + 4 = 6. Up changes the second number: 3 + 2 = 5. You land at (6, 5).
