Number Patterns
Following a rule such as “add 6” or “multiply by 2” to continue a pattern of numbers. Fifth grade.
The mistake to watch for. Using the wrong kind of rule: finding the differences when the pattern is multiplying, or the ratios when it is adding. Check two steps before trusting a rule.
How to help. Write arrows between the numbers (+4, +4, +4) and check that the same rule works every time.
A worked example
Rule: add 6. Start at 2: 2, 8, 14, ___. Each number is 6 more than the one before, so the next number is 14 + 6 = 20. For “multiply by 2” starting at 3: 3, 6, 12, 24.
