This free name tracing tool makes printable name tracing sheets. Type one name per line, and it builds a page for each name with a dark model row, gray letters to trace, and blank lines for writing the name alone. It runs in your web browser, nothing is uploaded, and no account or sign-up is needed.

You can choose the letter style, line size, number of tracing rows and blank rows, and whether to add a picture box. The preview updates as soon as you change a setting, so you can check the sheet before you print it or save it as a PDF. Use it for one child’s name at home or for a whole class list at school.

How to use the name tracing tool

  1. In the box labeled “Names (one per line),” type a name. For a class, paste the list with one name on each line. The box starts with “Emma Liam” as an example.
  2. Open Letters and choose Exactly as typed, Capital first letter, then lowercase, or ALL CAPITALS.
  3. Open Line size and choose the size that fits the child’s age. The default is Extra large, 1 inch (pre-K–K).
  4. Set Rows of tracing to the number of gray rows you want. The default is 3.
  5. Set Blank rows to write on. The default is 2.
  6. Choose Tracing letters: Light gray or Dotted outline.
  7. Choose Letter weight: Regular or Bold (thicker letters).
  8. Tick “Add a ‘draw yourself’ picture box” if you want a picture frame. Leave “Show descender line” on if the names contain g, j, p, q or y.
  9. Check the preview, then press Print or save as PDF. Set the paper size to US Letter or A4 and print at 100% scale.

Use New worksheet to make a different sheet with the same settings. Each sheet has a short worksheet code under the buttons. Reset settings returns everything to the defaults. The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet again.

How do I make a name tracing worksheet?

Start by typing the child’s name in the names box, then set the line size and rows. Each name becomes its own page with a heading, a first row that shows the name in dark letters, gray copies to trace, and blank rows at the bottom for writing the name alone. The preview shows the result, so you can adjust the settings until the page looks right.

Keep the first row for modeling. Write the name slowly in front of the child, saying each letter as you form it, and then let them trace. A worksheet with two or three tracing rows and two blank rows gives enough practice without making the page feel long.

How do I make name tracing sheets for a whole class?

Paste the whole class list into the names box with one name on each line. The tool makes one page per name, in the same order as your list, so you can hand the pages out as they come off the printer.

Check the preview for long names, since a long last name can need a smaller line size or fewer rows. If you ask for more rows than fit, the tool drops blank rows first and shows a short note explaining the change. Print once, then keep the pages together in the order you want them.

Should a name be written with a capital first letter?

The answer depends on what the child is being taught. A name is usually written with a capital first letter and lowercase letters after it, which is the standard form in most schools. Choose “Capital first letter, then lowercase” under Letters to show that form.

ALL CAPITALS suits children who are still learning to recognize letters. If your school expects a capital first letter, pick that option so the model matches what the child will be asked to write. “Exactly as typed” keeps each name the way you entered it.

How do I print name tracing sheets at home?

Open the page, set your options, and press Print or save as PDF. Choose US Letter or A4 for the paper size, and set the printer to 100% scale, sometimes called “Actual size.” This keeps the line heights true, so the letters sit correctly on the lines.

If you print double-sided, set the printer to single-sided. Each name starts on a new page, so two children’s names could otherwise end up on the same sheet. Gray letters can look faint on some printers, so choose Bold letter weight or Dotted outline if the tracing is hard to see.

What age is name tracing for?

Name tracing suits preschool children who are starting to form letters and older children who are still building control of their pencil. The line size is the main setting to match to age. Extra large lines (1 inch) suit pre-K and K, Large (3/4 inch) suits K to 1st grade, Medium (5/8 inch) suits 2nd grade, and Small (3/8 inch) suits 3rd grade and up.

For preschool, try Extra large lines with 3 to 4 tracing rows, no blank rows, Bold letters, and a picture box. For kindergarten at the start of the year, use Extra large lines with 3 tracing rows and 2 blank rows. Later in kindergarten, move to Large lines with 2 tracing rows, 3 blank rows and a dotted outline. For 1st grade, try Medium lines for a first and last name, and check the preview because last names can be long.

How do I get the most from name tracing practice?

Tracing one or two rows carefully works better than racing down the whole page. Encourage a relaxed tripod grip, and have the child hold the paper still with the other hand. Chunky crayons or triangular pencils can help small hands at the start of the year.

Date each sheet and keep a few through the year. Comparing the blank rows from September and December is a simple way to show a child, and their family, how far they have come. A page in a sheet protector at a writing center, with a dry-erase marker, lets children practice whenever they finish other work.

Questions teachers and parents ask

Is name tracing free to use?

Yes. The tool is free, runs in your web browser, and needs no account or sign-up. Nothing you type is uploaded.

Can I save the worksheet as a PDF?

Yes. Press **Print or save as PDF**, and the browser's print dialog can also save the sheet as a PDF file.

Will the same settings come back if I return later?

Yes, if you keep the page address. The address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet again. **Reset settings** restores the defaults.

What does the answer key do?

When the answer key is included, it prints on its own separate page after the worksheet. Keep it apart from the child's pages so the model does not give away the blank rows.

Why are my gray letters hard to see?

Light gray tracing can look faint on some printers, especially a non-laser printer. Choose Bold letter weight for thicker letters, or Dotted outline for a different style of tracing.

Do I need a descender line?

Only for names with letters that drop below the baseline, such as g, j, p, q or y. The descender line is on by default. Turn it off if the names have none of those letters and you want a cleaner page.

Can a child write a name that is not in the tool's examples?

Yes. Type any name in the names box, one name per line. The tool builds the tracing rows from whatever you enter, using the letter option you choose.
