Number Tracing Worksheets is a free tool that makes printable number tracing sheets for digits 0 to 9, 1 to 10, 1 to 20, or any range from 0 to 100. Each number is printed once in dark type as a model, then repeated in light gray (or a dotted outline) across the row for a child to trace over. It runs in your web browser, so nothing is uploaded, and no account or sign-up is needed.
You can add a row for number words, choose how many tracing and blank writing rows to include, and set the line size for your child’s age. The preview updates as you change settings, so you can check the sheet before you print. Paper can be set to US Letter or A4.
How to use the Number Tracing Worksheets tool
- Under Numbers, pick Digits 0 to 9, 1 to 10, 1 to 20, or Choose my own range. For a custom range, enter a From and a To value between 0 and 100.
- Under Number words, keep No words, or choose Add a row to trace the word to add a word row under each number.
- Under Page layout, choose Many numbers on a page or One number on each page.
- Under Line size, pick the size that fits your child’s age, from Extra large (pre-K–K) to Small (3rd and up).
- Set Tracing rows (0 to 6) and Blank rows to write on (0 to 4).
- Under Tracing letters, choose Light gray or Dotted outline. Under Letter weight, choose Regular or Bold.
- Leave Show descender line off for numbers. Turn it on only if you need the line for letters such as g, j, p, q, or y.
- Check the preview, set Paper size to US Letter or A4, and select Print or save as PDF. Print at 100% scale so the line heights stay true.
The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet. New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings, and each sheet has its own short worksheet code under the buttons. Reset settings returns every control to its default.
How do I make number tracing worksheets?
Open the tool, choose the numbers, layout, and line size, then print the sheet. The tool does the layout for you: each number is written once in dark print as a model, and the same number is repeated in light gray or a dotted outline across the row for tracing.
The model-then-repeat design is the main idea behind the sheet. The first row always shows the dark model, and each extra tracing row you add repeats the number in the lighter style. A child looks at the model, then follows the light copies, which gives them a clear target for each stroke.
Line size is the other key choice. The lines are drawn to exact measurements in inches, so a 3/4 inch row is 3/4 inch on both US Letter and A4 paper. Larger lines suit younger children who are still developing fine motor control, and smaller lines suit older children who write more neatly. Printing at 100% scale keeps those measurements accurate.
Gray digits look best from a laser printer. On an inkjet, where the gray can look faint, choose Dotted outline or Bold to make the tracing easier to see.
The sheet does not show stroke order or starting points. Handwriting programs teach numbers in different ways, so a sheet that showed one order could conflict with what a child is taught at school. If your child’s class uses a particular method, follow that method when you guide the tracing.
Can I make number tracing 1 to 10 or 1 to 20?
Yes. Under Numbers, choose 1 to 10 or 1 to 20. For any other range, choose Choose my own range and enter the first and last numbers in From and To, with values from 0 to 100. If From is larger than To, the tool swaps them, so the sheet still runs in order.
Short ranges work well for beginners because a child can finish a whole sheet in one session and see the progress. You can start with 1 to 10 and move to 1 to 20 once the shapes feel familiar. The same settings always produce the same sheet, so you can repeat a range until it becomes easy.
Questions teachers and parents ask
Can children trace number words too?
Yes. Choose **Add a row to trace the word** under **Number words**. A word row appears under each number, with the word printed in full, such as seven, thirteen, twenty-one, or one hundred. Words are produced for every number from 0 to 100, with a hyphen between tens and ones from 21 to 99. A word too long to fit twice on a line is written once as a model and then traced on the next row.
What age is number tracing for?
Number tracing is useful for young children who are learning to write digits, and older children can use it for practice too. The **Line size** setting matches the sheet to the child: Extra large (1 inch) is labeled for pre-K to K, Large (3/4 inch) for K to 1st, Medium (5/8 inch) for 2nd, and Small (3/8 inch) for 3rd and up.
Which digits do children reverse most often?
Digits that look like mirror images of each other are the ones children most often write backward, such as 6 and 9, and some children also reverse 2, 5, or 7 while they are learning. Reversals are a normal part of learning to write. Tracing gives a child a clear model to copy, which helps build the right shape. If reversals continue for a long time, ask a teacher or a professional for advice.
Is Number Tracing Worksheets free, and do I need an account?
Yes, the tool is free, and no account or sign-up is needed. It runs in your web browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Can I save or share a sheet I made?
You can save it with **Print or save as PDF**, which opens the browser's print dialog, where you can also choose to save as a PDF. The page address stores your settings, so you can share the link or bookmark it to open the same sheet again. Each sheet also has a worksheet code shown under the buttons.
Why does my sheet have two pages?
The default settings, digits 0 to 9 with large lines and one tracing row each, produce a sheet that is 2 pages on both US Letter and A4. Changing the numbers, line size, or number of rows changes the page count. Choosing One number on each page gives each number its own page.
