This rounding worksheet generator makes printable rounding worksheets for whole numbers and decimals, with an answer key on its own page. You can round to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 or 100,000, mixed places, or decimals to the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth. It runs in your web browser, is free, and needs no account or sign-up. Nothing you make is uploaded.

Use it for rounding practice sheets at home or in class. Pick the rounding place and the number size, check the preview, then print the sheet or save it as a PDF. If a set of problems is too easy or too hard, change one setting and the preview updates straight away.

How to use the Rounding Worksheet Generator

  1. Type a heading in Title on the sheet. The default is “Rounding”.
  2. Open Round to and choose a rounding place, such as Nearest 10, or a decimal option, such as Decimals: nearest tenth.
  3. For whole numbers, set Number size from 2 to 7 digits. For decimals, set Whole-number part to 0 to 9, 10 to 99, or 100 to 999.
  4. Tick Include tricky ones once the basic idea is clear. This adds halfway numbers like 450 and numbers that roll over a 9, like 996.
  5. Tick Show the two choices if a child needs support. Each number then shows both possible answers, such as “4,300 or 4,400?”
  6. Set Problems (12 to 30) and Columns (2 to 4).
  7. Leave Include answer key ticked to print the answers on a separate page after the worksheet, or untick it to leave the key off.
  8. Check the sheet preview. If you want different numbers with the same settings, press New worksheet. Each sheet has a short worksheet code shown under the buttons.
  9. Set the paper size to US Letter or A4, then press Print or save as PDF.

The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet again. Press Reset settings to return every control to its default.

How do you round to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000?

To round to a place, find the digit in that place and look at the digit just to its right. If that digit is 4 or less, the rounded digit stays the same. If it is 5 or more, the rounded digit goes up by one. Every digit to the right of the rounding place then becomes a zero, and the digits on the left stay as they are.

Take 4,372 rounded to the nearest hundred. The hundreds digit is 3, and the digit to its right is 7, so the 3 goes up to 4. The tens and ones become zeros, giving 4,400. The answer is not 4,472, because the digits on the right are zeroed, and it is not 5,000, because the thousands digit does not change.

The same method works for any place. Rounding 4,372 to the nearest 10 looks at the 2 in the ones place and gives 4,370. Rounding it to the nearest 1,000 looks at the 3 in the hundreds place and gives 4,000. Underlining the digit in the rounding place and circling the digit just to its right makes the decision visible on paper.

Why does 450 round to 500?

A number like 450 is exactly halfway between 400 and 500, because it is 50 away from each. It is equally close to both, so the decision has to come from a rule. The usual rule in US schools is to round up when a number is exactly halfway, so 450 becomes 500 to the nearest hundred.

The rule still uses the digit next to the rounding place. To round 450 to the nearest hundred, the rounding place is the hundreds digit, 4. The digit to its right is the 5 in the tens place. Because 5 is 5 or more, the 4 goes up to 5, and the tens and ones become zeros, giving 500.

Halfway values appear in decimals too. 6.5 is exactly halfway between 6 and 7, so rounding to the nearest whole number gives 7. Picturing the number on a number line, with the halfway point marked, helps children see why it sits in the middle. Once they know the rule, they can apply it the same way to 450, 6.5, and any other halfway number.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How do you round decimals to the nearest tenth?

Look at the hundredths digit, which is the one just to the right of the tenths. For 3.96, that digit is 6, so the 9 in the tenths place goes up. Since 9 plus 1 makes 10 tenths, which is 1 one, the answer is 4.0.

What happens when rounding up crosses a 9, like 996?

The rounded digit still goes up, even when it is a 9, and the carry moves left. To round 996 to the nearest ten, look at the 6 in the ones place, so the 9 in the tens place goes up to 10, which carries into the hundreds and makes 1,000. Picturing 996 on a number line between 990 and 1,000 shows that 1,000 is closer.

Which rounding worksheets suit 3rd, 4th and 5th grade?

For 3rd grade, use nearest 10 and nearest 100 with 2- and 3-digit numbers, with the two choices shown at first (3.NBT.A.1). For 4th grade, use nearest 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000, then mixed places with 5- to 7-digit numbers (4.NBT.A.3). For 5th grade, use decimals to the nearest whole number, tenth and hundredth, then mixed (5.NBT.A.4).

Can I get a different sheet with the same settings?

Yes. Press New worksheet to make a new set of problems with the same settings, and note the worksheet code shown under the buttons. Press Reset settings to return every control to its default.

Is my worksheet stored or sent anywhere?

No. The tool runs in your web browser, so nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account or sign-up to use it.

Can I print on A4 paper?

Yes. Set the paper size to A4 or US Letter, then press Print or save as PDF. You can also use your browser's print dialog to save a PDF, and the answer key prints on its own page after the worksheet when it is included.
